 Burning Issues :
Eggs in Midday Meal
We must stop serving eggs under the Mid-day Meal Scheme.

The National Programme of Nutritional Support to Primary Education or the Mid-day Meals Scheme was launched on the 15th August, 1995 by Government of India. The motive behind this scheme was to give boost to universal primary education. It was expected to increase enrolment, attendance, retention along with improving the nutritional status of the children in the primary classes in the Government schools, local body schools and also in Government-aided schools. The scheme intended to cover all students of primary classes (1-5). In the budget of 2008/09, Government has declared to extend this scheme.

The Mid-day meal scheme provides for the distribution of cooked meals to children through the local implementing agencies. 12 crore children are now being covered under the Mid-day meal scheme which is the largest lunch programme in the world.

At present the comprehensive “National Programme of Nutritional Support to Primary Education, 2006 (Mid day meal Scheme) Guidelines” are made by Central Government. The guidelines provide for suggestions for preparation of nutritious and cost effective meal as per para 4.1 of the guidelines.

However, as there are no clear guidelines, attempts have been made by various state governments to introduce eggs in the meals to children’s. In this regard, we firmly believe that Government must not provide eggs under this scheme. We heartily pray to the Government that please serves only vegetarian foods under this scheme because – Vegetarian food is common food eaten by all including persons eating non vegetarian food. While all non vegetarian food eaters eat vegetarian food but vegetarian food eaters do not eat eggs. No harm will be caused by serving vegetarian food to non vegetarian food eater. However, same is not true other way.

If non vegetarian food is served, it will result in parents deciding against sending their child to schools. Objective of the midday meal scheme was to provide food to the children ensuring a reduction in their drop out rate. This would defeat the main objective of the Scheme Eating eggs is considered as sin as per religious beliefs followed by mass population, and if the same is provided, it is a blow to the sentiments of vegetarians.

The guidelines for serving cooked food under the Scheme are already in place. The present Guidelines clearly provide suggestions for the preparation of vegetarian nutritious and economic food. The said present Guidelines does not envisage the serving of egg at all. Like school uniforms, food should be uniform too. This will bring uniformity, breed equality and will avoid feeling about differential treatment from beginning.

The scheme provides indirect employment to lacs of women and poor people. There are number of non-governmental organisations involved in executing the midday meal scheme. If eggs are included under the scheme, they would refrain from participating in the Scheme due to their religion and sentimental reasons depriving employment to such people.

The Supreme Court has ordered serving of hot cooked meal and for which the Central Government is providing food, its transportation and support for conversion cost. It also never envisaged serving eggs and the Guidelines also suggest the preparations which are purely vegetarian.

The high proteins alternatives are available – moogfali , dal , pulses or banana. There is no need to introduce eggs under the grab of high proteins. Moogfali is more rich in protine as per the Government’s health bulletin.

Health experts around the world believe that consuming eggs lead to heart ailments. It wouldn’t be appropriate to inculcate food habits which may cause health problems later in life.
Even if the eggs are to be served with consent of the parents, the same should not be permitted. The child at the nascent age sees and learns. If child sees the others eating eggs, he would be tempted to eat the same.

It would be difficult for the parents to control them over a period of time. If the child develops the habit and the said food is not available at his home, this would lead to imbalance and greater harm to the family system and values.

We hope that Government will stop serving eggs and will ensure the healthy and nutritious future of the Great India and Young India.
