 Burning Issues :
Stop Meat Export
AN APPEAL FROM THE FARMERS OF INDIA We, the farmers of this country have been performing the duty of feeding the millions (and now over a billion) of our brothers and sisters of this country. Our livestock has been our valuable ally in this endeavor. In fact without their contribution we and the agriculture of our country would have been nowhere.

This invaluable wealth of our country is under destruction at a fast pace. Lakhs of animals are slaughtered every day for local consumption of meat and what is more worrying – for exports. Slaughter for exports is taking a toll on young and healthy animals, which are so useful for our economy and agriculture. The foreign exchange earning from meat export is a pittance compared to earnings from other sectors such as I.T., Textile, Engineering goods, Gem and Jewellery exports etc. Meat export adversely effects environment, livelihood in rural areas and the agriculture sector by destroying the source of draught power, freely available organic manure and bio pesticides.Kindly stop this mindless destruction of our national wealth by banning meat export from this country for which the entire country will be grateful to you. In fact this is a direction from the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India to the central government to review the meat export policy.

If you wish we may submit a detailed memorandum on this issue, which will convince beyond any doubts the need to ban meat export. There is a nation wide consensus in favour of such a ban. Another issue is imparting total ban on slaughter of entire cow prodigy. The Supreme Court has also expressed itself in favour of such a ban. State laws in as many as 13 States already have imposed such a ban covering more than 60% of land area and the population of the country. By a central legislation in effect only the remaining 40% will be covered, where as your government will earn 100% credit for this laudable step. Our farmer community is rallying under a wave of nation wide suicides in thousands. This is due to heave debt burden resulting from exorbitant rise in input costs.

These costs can be brought down with adequate availability of life stock and cattle. In fact, a study done by Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai bought out a fact, that the incident of suicide was negligible in farmer families that had life stock to fall back on. In view of these facts we the farmer community earnestly request to the Government of India – Ban of meat export from the country and To enact a central law imposing total ban on slaughter of entire cow progeny.
